Becomes one of a select few to back the open-source projects at such a high level

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/03/2012 -- The Linux Foundation has been given a bump of support by the HP company. The nonprofit organization promotes growth and development of the free Linux operating system. It does so through the upping of membership level from Gold to Platinum status.

The newest in membership levels requires HP pay $500,000 in annual dues to the Foundation. That kind of promise of payment is a rarity for companies. Currently, Fujitsu, IBM, Intel, NEC, Oracle, Qualcomm, and Samsung also participate at the Platinum level.

AMD, Cisco, Google, Huawei, Motorola, Nokia, Sony, and others remain solidified at the Gold member level for the Foundation. That level requires $100,000 annual investment.

Cononical is the leading Linux vendor, as well as Red Hat make smaller investments as Silver Members to the foundation. Each of the silver members of the Linux Foundation pays $5,000 to $20,000 per year.

The Linux Foundation spends dues in an array of production and upkeep costs. Some costs are used to employ Linux Linus Torvalds. HP’s track-record has not been stellar. Current CEO Meg Whitman is the fourth to hold the position since 2005, and HPs board has shown almost no ambition toward innovative plan. So while the move may interest those who champion crowd sourcing of ideas and open-source product, HP as a major backer of Linux is still a bit of an overall mystery.

Political party Pirate Party UK targeted by BPI

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/03/2012 -- A proxy website that links to previously banned media download site has been targeted by a British music industry. The site has been cited for violating copyright laws, and the industry is demanding that the proxy site shut down access to the banned site.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has requested that the site, operated by political party Pirate Party UK, shut down access to The Pirate Bay immediately. The Pirate Bay was determined to be in violation of copyright laws and has since been block by United Kingdom courts.

BPI requested closure of the link to The Pirate Bay in a letter to Pirate Party UK&aposs leader, Loz Kaye, who told the BBC that his party is currently "seeking legal advice" in regard to the request.

"We&aposve been clear all along, the reasons for the proxy," Kaye said. "It is a legitimate tool, for a legitimate political end."

Representatives from the political party say that it established the proxy website as an act of "freedom of expression," along with the right to "share information and ideas without interference and that censorship is never the right answer."

In response, Geoff Taylor, BPI&aposs chief executive, stated "Freedom of expression is not an absolute right.

"It comes with a duty to respect the rights of others, including those whose talent, hard work and investment help to create music and other entertainment."

Meanwhile, response to the creation of the proxy website has been extremely positive for the Pirate Party UK&aposs website.

In research provided by Alexa, a Web metrics supplier, the political party&aposs website was ranked 1,943 in the U.K. prior to launching the proxy website. Since that time, it has risen all the way to 147th, higher than more well-known websites like the Huffington Post and Netflix.

Taylor requested that the Pirate Party UK respond to the letter by December 6. Kaye told the BBC they plan to have their response prepared by that time.

City welcomes new design company after losing Rockstar and Radical Entertainment
