Unencrypted NASA Data on Stolen Employee Laptop Reports miTracker

Space agency implementing security measures to protect sensitive information

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/21/2012 -- A computer laptop that contained unencrypted NASA security data stolen two weeks ago from a NASA employee’s car near NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

NASA issued a warning to all employees and contractors that personal information, such as social security numbers, may have been compromised as a result of the theft.

In a notice to employees, NASA said, "On October 31, 2012, a NASA laptop and official NASA documents issued to a headquarters employee were stolen from the employee&aposs locked vehicle. The laptop contained records of sensitive personally identifiable information (PII) for a large number of NASA employees, contractors and others," wrote Richard J. Keegan Jr., associate deputy administrator of NASA, in the notice.

The notice went on state that the data on the laptop had not been encrypted, so “although the laptop was password protected, it did not have whole disk encryption software, which means the information on the laptop could be accessible to unauthorized individuals," Keegan said.

According to Keegan, it may take up to 60 days for all affected employees and contractors to be identified and contacted by NASA, due to the amount of information that has to be reviewed and validated both manually and electronically.

The theft has caused NASA to change security measures for NASA-issues laptops, such as implementing full-disk encryption software.

All affected individuals will be contacted by NASA via a written, mailed letter as opposed to email or telephone contact, as a safety precaution. Keegan said that they have hired specialists to identify and assist in any cases of identity theft or fraud to those affected by the breach.

As a result of the breach, NASA has ordered that NASA-issued laptops cannot leave a NASA facility until whole-disk encryption software has been enabled or that any sensitive files accessible through the laptop have been individually encrypted.

"This applies to laptops containing PII, international traffic in arms regulations (ITAR) and export administration regulations (EAR) data, procurement and human resources information, and other sensitive but unclassified data," Keegan said.

December 21 has been set to have all NASA-issued laptops fully encrypted. AdSA has banned the storage of any sensitive material on portable devices, such as smartphones or tablets. All sensitive information is also to be purged from the laptops once that information is no longer needed.

Smoking Numbers Fall but CDCP Wants More to Quit Reports Smoking Section

From 2005 to 2011, the overall number of cigarette smokers has fallen

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/23/2012 -- The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) has released a report stating that the overall percentage of adult cigarette smokers in the United States has dropped from 20.9% in 2005, to 19% in 2011.

Unfortunately, the report also shows that there was little to no drop from 2010 to 2011.

Let us look at some other numbers from the report: People who smoke more than 30 cigarettes a day fell from 12.6% in 2005 to 9.1% in 2011, while those who smoke between one and nine rose from 16.4% in 2005 to 22% in 2011.

As far as age and ethnicity, here are the numbers from the report: In 2011, 21% of smokers were men, while 16.5% were women. The lowest percentage of smokers by ethnicity came from non-Hispanic Asians at 9.9%, but was highest in non-Hispanic American Indians/Alaskan Natives at 31.5%.

It was found that people above the age of 65 made up 7.9%, the lowest of any age demographic, while between the ages of 25 and 44 made up the highest percentage with 22.1%. The report also showed that those people living under the federal poverty line made up 29%, while those above made up 17.9%.

A new statistic in this year’s report measured the number of smokers among the disabled community. The results found that 25.4% were made up of people who said they had a disability, while 17.3% were those who said they did not.

The report showed progress, but the “Healthy People 2020” target is 12% of adult smokers. This would mean a 7% drop in just eight years, but with new smoke-free laws, the higher retail value of tobacco, the ability to get better quitting treatments, along with strong media campaigns, the target is not out of reach.

The report gave credit to the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act as well as the Food and Drug Administration for their new policy of regulation in the tobacco industry. The report said that with all of the new laws coming in every day about smoking, it could potentially accelerate the decline in adult smokers over the next decade.

In the report, the CDCP said that a reason we may have seen a recent slowing of percentage decrease is due to state funding for programs. According to the numbers, just two states last year funded control programs at an adequate level, while over half funded with less the one-fourth of adequate levels. If this can be rectified, the CDCP expects to see a large percentage decrease in adult smokers, but it needs to come from the state level. The federal government can only do so much. When the money is given to the states, it is their responsibility to see to it that the money goes to the right places.

The CDCP report should open eyes and give people pause for thought. If the country can decrease its percentage of adult smokers, it can lower spending on medical care and save millions for better use. With so many people getting sick from tobacco related diseases, it consistently takes away from the medical system’s budget and energy, which ultimately can be avoided.

All of this cost the company approximately $2,000 per year.

"That&aposs a small price to pay," said Alfano.

Alfano, who noted that Advanced Nutraceuticals, which is a small- to medium-sized company, earns slightly less than $10 million in sales annually. Their effort paid off because two other backups, in the form of onsite servers, that the company hag were lost to floodwaters.

Hackensack, N.J.-based information technology company Synetek Solutions managing partner Jhovanny Rodriguez said offsite backups in data centers are important because businesses often cannot recoup their losses once they lose their data.

Rodriguez added that companies hoping to remain operational when disaster strikes should seriously consider remote hosting their data, both to keep it safe and to allow them to remain functional, even if they have no power. Waiting to make that decision at the last minute, however, can be troublesome.

“In the middle of a disaster,” Rodriguez said, “trying to move the data … it becomes a little difficult.”

Data centers can be affected by storms like Sandy as well. For example, one key data center in the lower Manhattan section of New York City was flooded, knocking out major websites and causing issues with international phone calls.

Most data centers have enormous generators that can be called upon to supply power should service be lost due to storm damage, allowing them to operate during natural disasters and supply customer’s data to them uninterrupted.
