Google's Search Totals Dip Below 90%

Bing and Yahoo have lion’s share of growing shares in newly allocated search numbers

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/14/2012 -- Google’s searching numbers have dipped in a rather dramatic fashion over the last month, extending a current trend of dropping totals over the last year. If the current trend holds true, then Microsoft’s Bing will be set to take over by early 2016.

For Google, the trend is not a gigantic one. However, Experian, which owns the internet tracking company Hitwise, reports that in October, Google’s UK share dipped under 90% of total searches.

The actual drop in number is considerable tiny when the exact numbers are tallied. The former month’s numbers were tallied at 90.74% searches, while October saw 89.33%. That fall of 1.41%, and however small that may seem to some, is a huge positive sign for companies like Bing. Coupled with the decrease of Google’s loss, was Bing’s gain of 0.72% to see a tally of 4.71% total. The rest of Google’s loss was to Yahoo, while a small portion went to Ask and various other sites.

Bing has seen a steady, albeit still small, rise in its share since the start of 2012. There is still very little in the way of shares for the many sites vying for the scraps left by Google, but the total of non-Google searches is rising.

The biggest question posed in all the numbers is: Why has Google been experiencing a dip in overall search totals, while Bing rose?

Experian postulated that the October release, which has Bing has its go-to search engine. That partnership “may have gone some way to increase Microsoft’s market share,” according to the company.

However, the Windows 8 release was in late October, and so it seems like quite a stretch to assume it had anything to do with significant moves in the search totals.

In a statement, Experian Hitwise said: "Clearly, Google still maintains a huge competitive edge over the other search engines in the UK market. There are 18 times more searches conducted on Google Sites than on all the other search engines combined. However, this is encouraging news for Microsoft as Bing once again starts to gain some momentum and traction in the UK search market."

Microsoft’s Bing has also run a considerable number of commercials, noting its supposed superiority to Google, which may have led at least some to utilize the service. The use of social media sites may also be playing a large role in how individuals choose search engines. Auxiliary portions of search engines, such as Google Maps and Google Shopping also play into the number totals. It is possible the dip has something to do with the more trying other like-sites.

The largest harbinger of possible change is the use of mobile devices that may come with preloaded preferred search engines. The companies that win out in the regard will be formidable shareholders in the global search marketplace.

Android deployment has been on a huge increase in the past few years, and with this new idea, could be on pace to take over the world’s cellphone market. The “Free Zone” is not only for mobile and can also be used on laptop PC’s and tablets, something that could further expansion.

Asian push fuels ambitions for global services with all the buzzwords that matter

The wireless mobile company recently acquired a number of cloud and telematics assets making it “one of a handful” of international companies likely to emerge from the recent global recession intact, said a company spokesperson. “Not every species or company makes it to the next era,” said Verizon Enterprise Solutions chief marketing officer John Harrobin.

The pairing of cloud and mobility represent the third significant era in computing, he added. “The very technology that is delivering enterprise IT is shifting from premises-based, to cloud-based and this is massively disruptive. It is in this discontinuity that we see the opportunity for Verizon to reposition itself in the marketplace and capture additional value.”

Verizon recently purchased Hughes Telematics, which manufactures wireless systems for automobiles, for $612 million, as well as Terremark Worldwide, a cloud computing company, for $1.4 billion. It plans to zero in on Asia Pacific markets with its new cloud computing capabilities.

“The assets that we have enable us to do that,” said Harrobin. “The IT delivery model now requires cloud and mobility. Broadband whether wired or wireless not only enables cost savings but business transfer opportunities.”

“We have very significant plans for our security and cloud services and in Australia these are our biggest pushes,” Harrobin said. The company owns two data centers in Canberra and one in Sydney and Melbourne respectively.

Following its MCI Worldcom acquisition, Verizon also operates fiber networks in Sydney and Melbourne.

“We would seek to partner appropriately to that market (on NBN),” said Verizon Enterprise Solutions assistant vice president for APAC strategy Robert Le Busque. “The wholesale interconnect through the region is very key to us. All of a sudden we have the potential to access infrastructure and to provide secure links for our corporation or enterprise in a far more agile and dynamic way than ever before.”

UMass Research Shows that Online Users Do Not Like to Wait

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/16/2012 -- According to a new study from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Akamai Technologies, it only takes two seconds for Internet users to ditch online videos if they are not loading correctly.

Additionally, according to the data, about 40% of Internet users will abandon the video in its entirety at the 10-second mark. On average, for every second that the video doesn&apost start playing after the two-second mark, there&aposs a 5.8% increase in the rate at which the video viewers bail.

However, these finding depend on the video that users are watching, as the authors have noted: "Viewers are less tolerant to startup delay for a short video such as a news clip than a long video such an hour-long TV episode.” Overall, the findings seem to confirm the Internet truism that online users don&apost like to wait.

Jeff John Roberts writes on the site GigaOm said, "The study. . . contains no startling surprises -- most of us probably suspected that people give up on watching videos that don&apost load . . . But it does provide useful empirical evidence for companies who must decide how to invest architecture to support their video platforms."

Some technology bloggers were surprised people did not click away faster from slow Internet videos. Previous studies, including a report from the The New York Times, suggest that Internet users are even more impatient when it comes to text-based websites. This past February,

The Times stated in an article that cited Harry Shum from Microsoft, that online users will go to a website less frequently if it loads 250 milliseconds slower than a competitor&aposs. This is literally faster than than the blink of an eye. A Google engineer told The Times reporter, "Every millisecond matters.”

The UMass-Amherst research study was based on data collected from 6.7 million online video viewers over a 10-day period. In total, 23 million online videos were viewed. The study also found that a website’s video quality has a potentially long-term impact on a website&aposs popularity. Compared to a viewer whose online videos loaded smoothly, a "viewer who experienced failure" is about 2% less likely to come back to that web site the same week the “failed” video was watched.

Watching online videos is also about expectations, as viewers expect watching videos on a desktop computer with high-speed connection to be fast and consistent. They may feel differently and display more patience when watching a video on their smartphones.

Also, think back to the “old” days of dial-up Internet and remember how long you used to wait for a single photo to load on a super-slow Internet connection. Dante D&aposOrazio writes for The Verge that efforts to make online video loading faster may inevitably be an "unwinnable battle." He writes, “There may very well be a point when we&aposll no longer notice, but for now, it seems that you can never have enough speed."
